            August 9, 2001."

3.         Chair's report

Stacey Banks announced that Lisa Villano, Coalition coordinator is the new       student commissioner on the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.

Banks also met with President Hamilton regarding his perceptions of the value of the System Governance Council, which led to the president coming to four meetings of the Council this year. More meetings may need to be scheduled and regents also need to be invited.

3.         President Hamilton

The value of the System Governance Council to President Hamilton is input and             assessment, general guidance and potentially a significant mechanism for gauging       a larger feel for what we are doing as a university.

President Hamilton’s planning horizon centers on 2009; that is the golden anniversary of statehood.  The other reason is that 2009 is about the time the state will receive its first revenues from gas royalties. Whatever that date is, whatever the university is at the end of the pipeline we will live with for at least a generation.

President Hamilton spoke to the making the university the center of gravity and getting more money in the governor’s budget.  To do that, we need greater pride and participation within the university and community.   He also spoke to the need for unity, that people outside the university view us as one university.

Sewell was struck by support or lack of support in communities.  How can

Community support be enhanced. Are there ways UAA can be of more service in the Anchorage bowl?  Are there certain legislators we can prevail upon more by the alumni?  How can the alumni be of better use in garnering support?  How can the alumni participate in attracting and retaining faculty and staff?  How can the alumni serve to develop student internships?

President Hamilton spoke the need for more faculty and staff recognition.

President Hamilton had to leave to attend a meeting with the chancellors so there was no time for questions and answers.

5.         Comments

Larry Duffy said that the Council needed face-to-face meetings where people can get together and work on the unity issue.  Have more meetings where people can get together.

Cindy Branley said that UAA alumni are working on the Anchorage chamber.  UAF alumni in Anchorage are also working on supporting the university.

Larry Duffy said that it is very hard to sell the university if you don’t know what the plans are.  How can we plan what systemwide governance is going to do if we don’t know what statewide is planning.  That is a negative condition that needs to be changed.  Carol Gold said faculty should have a session with the president where they explain to him what they do.

The Council agreed to work on the following

·        Recognition of faculty and staff (national-international-state-university).

·        Include recognition for students and alumni

·        Building support for the university; making the university the center of gravity

There needs to be communications among Council members well before the November meeting so that President Hamilton can be advised and so that he can prepare for the November meeting.

Stacey Banks will work on obtaining funding for a face-to-face meeting or retreat.

Stacey Banks will send out an e-mail message asking for everyone’s availability so he can schedule another meeting before the November videoconference meeting with President Hamilton.

6.         Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 1:37pm.
